Every 60 seconds the application will execute a Ping on each of the devices you have it setup for.
If you have any problems with communicating with other computers in the network, disable all software firewalls and try it, if it works while the software firewall is disabled, then you will need to configure the software firewall to allow share folders. We recommend you use a hardware firewall instead of software firewalls anyway. The external hardware firewalls are generally much faster! You may already have the hardware firewall such as a Linksys Router. If you need to keep the software firewall, then follow the venders instructions to allow shared folders to work!
The first time you run Super Ping, the first box will appear in the upper left corner of the screen. To add more boxes click the Add Box button.
If you do not create a file name on the command line, the default name will be "default".
After the first unanswered ping, the icon for that machine turns yellow.
After the second ping is not answered, the icon color changes to red, and gives you an audio alarm.
You can use "autostart" on the command line to start the application automatically. The "autostart" option on the command line allows you to run Super Ping from other programs or even from a batch file.
Once you start the program, even if you do not use "autostart" in the command line, after 1 minute of zero keyboard or mouse activity, the application will automatically start.
You can click the Save As button to save the current monitor file as a different file name. This makes it very easy to copy one monitor setup to another. To create a new file just type in the text box to right of the Save As button.
The Print button will cause all of the buttons to disappear, and print the current screen to the default printer.
Click the Sound button to set or change the sound that will play after a second missed ping. The default sound is ringin.wav on the C:\Windows\Media or the C:\winnt\media folders depending on your operating system. As you double click the new sound file, you will hear the file you just selected. You can use any file that you can play from Windows Media Player, but we suggest you use .wav or .mp3 files to allow for future use with other software.
Click the Add Box button to add an IP address to ping. After you click the Add Box button, you will see a new icon in the upper left corner of the screen. You move the pointer to the icon, then drag it to where you want it. You will see two text lines appear under the icon. The first line is a 'pingable' name or IP address. The second line is a smaller text font. Here you can type a description of the machine in question, for example, you can type "Mail Server", "WWW Server" , "DNS", "Default Gateway" or anything else you wish to use to describe the machine or path. We recommend you at least monitor your default gateway, DNS, mail server, and web server if you have one.
Click the Picture button to change the background picture. The default is no picture. But you can save a PowerPoint drawing as a picture. We have network drawings we did in PowerPoint that we use.
Click the Save button to save current information.
Click the Start button to actually start monitoring your network.
While Super Ping software is running you will see all of the icons should be green and if that is the case you will see "All Green" in the title bar.
If you wish to discontinue monitoring one location, you can double click the icon in question and it will change from green to black.
While monitoring the network, if you see a yellow icon or a red icon, you can double click the icon to mute the alarm and turn the icon black. You will see "Audio for Muted. At this point, this icon will stay muted until you double click the icon once more to start monitoring it again.
Each network file you setup will be able to run independently of each other. Even the window sizes and locations can be different. For example, you may want one file to monitor your work place network and another file to monitor your home network.
The protocol that Ping uses is ICMP. If you are unable to get an answer from a machine that looks like it is otherwise working, many firewalls are setup to not allow ping. You can set the firewall to allow ping, buy allowing the ICMP protocol. We do not suggest anyone use software firewalls anyway. Hardware firewalls are usually faster and more secure. If you are using a software firewall on the computer, that means the network traffic you were trying to block is already at your network card in your computer. If you use a hardware firewall, the garbage is blocked before it gets to your network card, so your computer doesn't have to deal with it. The cost of a hardware firewall is almost as cheap as a software firewall. As of today, you can get them at any office or computer supply store for less than $50.00.
